HEIDI EVERETT ~ Musician and Mental Sk’illness Advocate
Heidi ‘hears’ music and she taught herself music theory to help deal with the torment. What transpired, was that those songs written without pretence would turn out to be some of the most incredible songwriting today. Heidi credits the Music Network for mental health for giving her the time and tools to craft her philosophy of music learnt from years playing solo. Heidi is in demand for her unique and always entertaining performances, her music has devastating clarity and energy. With a brand new album and band, Heidi Everett offers audiences much more than music, she gives you her life.
LONG
In 2008 Andrew Denton produced an award winning documentary about mental illness called 'Angels and Demons'. Australia and now also the world, has been moved by Andrew’s astounding interview with Heidi Everett and her personal story about living with schizophrenia and severe depression.
A confounding background - on the street, in psych wards, on and off all the wrong things, on death's door, could have given Heidi a one way ticket to despair, but instead of following that path to it's to it's true intent, she found music.
Heidi's natural but deliciously pure voice conveys the lyrics with stunning accuracy yet Heidi hadn't even seen a microphone until she was in her late 20's. After another stint in the psyche ward she decided to go to a rehabilitation music therapy group. Over many years of coaxing, Heidi finally sang out loud. What came out even surprised her!
With another musician from the group, Heidi pushed herself to start performing more - in cafe's, busking at countless markets and in pubs, even winning some songwriting awards and making the finals of music competitions. By winning one song contest, Heidi was able to create her first album which sold out the entire 100 CD's.
In 2005 Heidi joined the Music Network for mental health workshops (run by the Bipolar Bears) and her music career really fired up. With advice from esteemed Aussie muso's in the network, Heidi has taken the songs written in the most soul wrenching times of life and given them air to breathe.
When listeners hear Heidi's songs like The Angel Song for the first time, they are often moved to tears not just through the sheer emotion but through the connection. Heidi writes the human condition and it really is as simple as that. With her band Hotel Echo on stage, audiences are guaranteed a premier performance by polished and passionate musicians.
Heidi can't help herself to get immersed in every single show she does, because whether it's a small intimate affair or a full on stage concert with fireworks, Heidi is the performance, she is the songs, she is the music.
Past performances: International Mental Health Conferences, International Day of Disability, Melodica, Port Fairy Winterfest, International Women's Day, Mental Health Week, Australia Day
