The Boite celebrates Australia’s amazing cultural diversity through a prolific program of festivals, events, radio programs, CDs and publications.
Established in 1979, we have presented and promoted hundreds of excellent musicians, dancers, writers and storytellers at thousands of events. These range from over 1,500 intimate concerts at the Boite World Music Cafe to many major concerts at the Melbourne Concert Hall, Melbourne Town Hall and elsewhere to audiences of over 2,000.
We are dedicated to building bridges between cultures and we look for opportunities to make creative spaces attractive to people from many communities. Many of the artists we deal with have fled their homelands seeking a new life in Australia. We do what we can to make them feel welcome and offer support. Time and time again we have been rewarded by brilliant musicianship from generous artists.
We encourage creative development and provide professional performance opportunities for artists. We promote audience development, not only in numbers and box office takings, but in the development of awareness, knowledge and respect for the work of the artists.
The most important area of our participatory program uses singing as a means of encouraging active participation in the arts. The Melbourne Millennium Chorus is a 350 voice choir we have built annually since 1999 for a major concert with a powerful theme, has received a series of outstanding reviews. The 2011 project, Freedom Road, was one of the most successful ever. The Boite Singers’ Festival at Daylesford also encourages singing in the community.
The Boite’s marketing strategies have proven very powerful in numerous professionally conducted surveys. We find that direct mail to the 3,000 active names on our mailing list, mainly Melbourne metropolitan addresses but also covering hundreds of supporters in regional Victoria, is still a powerful way of motivating people to come to events. We also produce regular email newsletters and have several facebook pages for our various projects.
Several Boite projects are expanding.
The Boite Schools Chorus this year involves 51 schools and 998 students. The Melbourne Millennium Chorus is working with colleagues in Timor-Leste to develop regional singing projects in that country. We might be working with collaborators interstate next year. The World Music Cafe is looking for new outlets for excellent musicians, both local and international, which focus on acoustic music in intimate venues. We have 20 years experience, and lots of systems in place to help make it easy.
