Ensō
exploring Japanese music, culture
a concert for Matsudo Week

This latest concert developed by shakuhachi player, Anne Norman features her collaboration with Tasmanian musician Emily Sheppard, on violin, viola and voice, and composer and musician, Noriko Tadano, shamisen and voice. Special guests are Caitlin Williams, flute, Yoshinori Kamizono, a young and wonderful shakuhachi student out here from Japan on a scholarship studying shakuhachi, (such is the extrordinary nature of our globalised musical world) and the Yukari-Echo, Japanese Women's Choir.

The evening offers Japanese music as it practised here, by expatriots and by non-Japanese devotees. Listeners will hear traditional shakuhachi honkyoku in new contexts; new songs by Noriko Tadano accompanied by tsugaru-jamisen & violin; a new choral work by Anne set to haiku by Kobayashi Issa and Japanese songs sung the Yukari Echo; moving new compositions for violin and voice; transporting works for violin and voice; shakuhachi and viola... and more!
