The Boite celebrates Australia’s amazing cultural diversity through a prolific program of festivals, events, radio programs, CDs and publications. Its dedicated staff using specialist expertise developed over 26 years have presented and promoted hundreds of excellent musicians, dancers, writers and storytellers at thousands of events. These range from over 1,200 intimate concerts by the fire at the Boite World Music Cafe to 10 major concerts at the Melbourne Concert Hall to audiences of over 2,000.
Many of the artists we deal with have fled their homelands looking for a new life in Australia. We do what we can to make them feel welcome and offer support and advice to practice their artform. We are dedicated to building bridges between cultures and look for opportunities to make creative spaces attractive to people from many communities.
Our main areas of concern are the encouragement of creative development, provision of professional performance opportunities for artists, encouragement of audience development, not only in numbers and box office takings, but in the development of awareness, knowledge and respect for the work of the artists, and a love of good music.
The most important area of our participatory program uses singing as a means of getting members of the community involved in expressing themselves creatively, usually in a group. The Melbourne Millennium Chorus, a 350 voice choir we have built annually for the past seven years for a major concert at the Melbourne Concert Hall. It has received a series of outstanding reviews. The Boite Singers’ Festival at Daylesford also encourages singing in the community.
The Boite’s marketing strategies have proven very powerful in numerous professionally conducted surveys. We find that direct mail to the 3,000 active names on our mailing list, mainly Melbourne metropolitan addresses but also covering hundreds of supporters in regional Victoria, is still the most effective way of motivating people to come to our events. This strategy has been extremely effective for our partners, including the Melbourne Museum and the City of Yarra.
One of the Boite’s most recent CDs, the Fig Tree, was judged by representatives of ScreenSound15 Australia, ABC-RN and the National Folk Festival as folk album of the year. It has received excellent reviews both in Australia and the USA.
The Boite is proud of its achievement over many years of converting small amounts of funding into major annual arts programs.
