Outstanding women with fantastic talent

From Februray 26 to April 5, The Boite will be presenting a series of four concerts featuring outstanding women with fantastic talent: a collaboration between guitarist Rose de la Montaña and poet E A Gleeson; an opportunity to hear Eurovision winner Luisa Sobral in her only concert in Melbourne; a double bill featuring Kavisha Mazzella and Mihirangi; and an electrifying show by visiting Irish singer SON (Susan O’Neill).

First up is Words and Tunes, a collaboration between fingerstyle guitarist Rose de la Montaña and poet EA Gleeson. It will be an evening of superb music and contemplative poetry to complement Magnet Gallery’s annual exhibition of women photographers. Anne Gleeson is a poet and writer based in Terang in the Western District of Victoria, Australia. She has published three poetry books In between the dancing, Maisie and the Black Cat Band and Small Acts of Purpose and numerous essays and articles have been in major Australian newspapers and literary journals. “A born storyteller and teacher, Anne’s gift with words and people, shines through every performance.” Rose de La Montaña is a fingerstyle guitarist with a love for solo Latin American guitar music, where classical and contemporary popular guitar styles meet. Her devotion to the guitar started from a young age and is inspired by the music of the Andes and Brazil. Find out more about the artists at www.mountainroseguitar.com and eagleeson.com.au

The second event features former Eurovision winner and one of the most important composers and singers from the new generation of Portuguese artists Luisa Sobral. Luisa has carved a niche for herself on the international scene, with appearances at SXSW in Texas and at the mythical BBC2 show “Later… with Jools Holland”. With 5 albums to her credit, she is currently touring her latest release “Rosa”–her most personal, mature and intimate work to date–to Australia. Sobral will stop at Womadelaide before coming to Melbourne. Here she will perform an exclusive show at the Spotted Mallard in The Boite’s intimate World Music Café series. Next in the series is a double bill featuring Kavisha Mazzella and Mihirangi (NZ), a unique opportunity to catch these two bold, original and powerful performers onstage together. Singing in English, Italian and other languages, Kavisha takes audiences on an uplifting journey of well-crafted stories and songs ringing with echoes of Celtic, Fado and Gypsy influences. She is a winner of numerous awards including the 1998 ARIA for her album "Fisherman's Daughter", the 2004 Port Fairy Artist of the Year award and the 2011 Australia Day Honour for her contribution to music and serving the community. From the foundation of earth-shaking bass lines to intricately layered harmonies, rhythmic ‘ska’ chops, sensuous jazzy riffs and beat boxing, Mihirangi’s utterly unique vision and the cross-cultural harmony that she herself represents is clearly heard in her music. Using loops and layered vocal sounds, she seamlessly creates a band sound in front of the audience, all done with the power of her voice, an incredible vocal range and an exceptional talent for timing, rhythm and dynamic tonality. Lastly, the series features SON (Susan O’Neill) (Ireland), a woman who merges a transnational melding of musical styles, encompassing the old and new. Eclectically fusing traditional Irish folk with rock, soul, gospel and blues, her live performances are quite simply electrifying. Her first album ‘found myself lost’ was one of Hot Press magazine’s ‘Albums of the Year’ and garnered her a number of heavyweight fans – most notably U2’s Bono and Irish trad superstar Sharon Shannon.
