About the Event
Veena is one of the most ancient solo musical instruments from South India with recorded origins dating back to as early as 1700 BC. It is a fretted lute with a large resonating chamber made of jackfruit wood, with the frets embedded in beeswax on a long neck. The strings are plucked with the right hand and pulled with left hand to produce the glides and micro tonal variations characteristic of Carnatic music.
The Melbourne Veena Festival, in its sixth edition, aims to actively contribute to the propagation of veena music so as to ensure a well-deserved pedestal in world music for this ancient instrument. Young performers in Australia are given a platform to share their art with a supportive audience and further develop their skills and expertise.
