About the Event
Elysian Blues: Double Album Launch — QiQi at Tempo Rubato
Join Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist and composer QiQi for a captivating evening celebrating the release of two new albums — Elysian Blues and their debut solo EP — in an intimate live performance at Tempo Rubato.
Blending guzheng, jazz fusion, and contemporary composition, QiQi’s music moves between delicacy, drive, and emotional depth. Their artistry reimagines the guzheng — a traditional Chinese zither — as a voice for both modern jazz and new contemporary works, expanding its expressive range through rhythm, texture, and nuance.
For this special concert, QiQi is joined by long-time collaborators Darby Lee (piano) and Alexander Meagher (percussion), performing original works that blur the boundaries between structure and spontaneity. The trio’s connection creates music that is both intricate and fluid — shifting seamlessly between composed frameworks and open improvisation.
Elysian Blues has earned multiple Melbourne Fringe Award nominations, praised for its originality and cross-genre innovation. Now, QiQi expands the concept through new compositions exploring identity, transformation, and joy — celebrating the freedom that comes from embracing one’s voice.
Expect an evening of rich textures, improvisation, and heartfelt performance — a celebration of artistic freedom, collaboration, and the evolving sound of Australian contemporary music.
