About the Event

It is believed the Sarajevo Haggadah originated in Barcelona around 1350 and may have been made as a
wedding present as the coats of arms of two different families appear in the bottom corner of the book.
It left Spain with the expulsion of Jews in 1492 and most likely travelled throughout Europe to arrive in Sarajevo
with Jews who had found refuge there in the 16th century.
In 1941, when the Nazis occupied Sarajevo, one of the first objects they sought out was the Sarajevo Haggadah.
However, thanks to the wit and ingenuity of its keepers the Haggadah was kept out of the Nazis' reach.
The book was then kept in the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina until 1992, when the institution,
along with the entire city, came under siege. Unlike other valuable manuscripts and museum pieces that went up
in the flames of war, the Haggadah was rescued by museum director.
